How Often Should You Really Get Your Hair Done? A Stylist’s Guide

The Beauty Brief | Vol. 4

Written by Katie Smafield, Owner + Founder of Salon 719

One of the questions we hear all the time is, “How often am I actually supposed to get my hair done?”

And the slightly annoying stylist answer is: it depends. 😂

Your ideal schedule depends on your color, haircut, natural growth, lifestyle, and, maybe most importantly, how much maintenance you actually want to commit to.

So instead of pretending there’s one magic number, here’s a realistic guide.

Balayage & Lived-In Color

Every 3–6 months

This is exactly why we love lived-in color. A customized balayage can grow out beautifully without leaving you with a harsh line at the root.

You may not need a full blonding appointment every time, either. A gloss, haircut, or face-frame refresh between larger appointments can keep everything looking fresh while giving your hair a break.

Traditional Highlights

Every 6–10 weeks

If you love a brighter blonde that comes closer to the root, you’ll typically want to visit more often.

Some guests prefer a partial highlight between larger appointments, while others are perfectly happy letting their blonde grow in a little longer. Your stylist can create a schedule based on how bright you like to stay.

Root Color / Gray Coverage

Every 4–6 weeks

Gray coverage tends to have one of the shortest maintenance schedules simply because your natural hair keeps growing.

If seeing your regrowth drives you crazy, four weeks may be your sweet spot. If you’re comfortable with a little grow-out, you may be able to stretch closer to six.

Gloss or Toner

Every 6–8 weeks

Notice your blonde getting warmer? Brunette losing some richness? Red looking a little less vibrant?

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need another full color service.

A gloss can refresh tone, add shine, and bring your color back to life without completely redoing it.

Haircuts

Every 6–12 weeks

This one depends heavily on your haircut.

Short cuts, bobs, bangs, and highly structured shapes usually need more frequent maintenance. Long layers and softer styles can often go longer.

And if you’re growing your hair? Skipping haircuts forever isn’t necessarily the answer. Regular trims can keep damaged ends from traveling farther up the hair shaft and help your hair look healthier while you grow it.

Hair Extensions

It depends on your method

Extensions aren’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is their maintenance.

Different methods have different schedules, and your natural hair, density, lifestyle, and home care all play a role. Your stylist should give you a personalized maintenance plan when choosing your extension method.

So…What’s Your Perfect Schedule?

Here’s the part we care about most at Salon 719:

Your hair should fit your life—not the other way around.

If you love being in the salon every four weeks, we’ll create a plan around that. If you want beautiful hair but only want to come in a few times a year, tell us that too.

A great consultation isn’t just about deciding what will look beautiful today. It’s about creating something you’ll still love weeks and months from now.

At Salon 719 in Colorado Springs, our stylists customize your color, cut, and maintenance plan around your hair, your goals, your budget, and your lifestyle.

Because beautiful hair is even better when it actually works for you. 🤍
